World-leading medical research precinct
Sunday 18 September 2022
The Box Hill Hospital precinct will be expanded with a world-leading clinical trials and research centre under a $108 million commitment announced today by the Victorian Liberals and Nationals.
A Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will provide $108 million towards the construction of a $180 million dedicated state-of-the-art Eastern Clinical Trials and Research Centre (ECTRC), including an 800-space low-cost car park to accommodate the patients and staff - with at least 400 spaces dedicated to staff.
The ECTRC will be jointly developed and operated by Eastern Health and Monash University and is expected to undertake clinical trials for a range of health issues including cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal conditions, and mental health disorders.
By leveraging the existing resources and capacity of Box Hill Hospital, the ECTRC will deliver clinical benefits to the growing local community and translate those benefits around Victoria and beyond.
Furthermore, this enables significant growth potential for development of Victoria’s medical technologies and pharmaceutical sector for more local innovations to be translated into commercially viable medical products.
This plan extends the capacity and reach of the Box Hill Hospital, by supporting both research and the translation of research outcomes into clinical practice across communities in Melbourne’s east, bringing the community access to new treatments for better care in and close to home.
This new facility will be delivered from funding reprioritised from shelving Labor’s $35 billion Cheltenham to Box Hill rail line, with additional funding contributions made by the Commonwealth and Monash University.
Leader of the Liberal Party, Matt Guy, said backing medical research was an important part of the Liberals and Nationals’ plan to bolster Victoria’s health system for the future.
“As Premier, my first priority will be to fix the health crisis and ensure we have world-leading facilities that bring medical treatments and better care to all Victorians.”
“This important commitment is another real solution to return confidence and build a stronger, more resilient heath system for the future.”
Shadow Minister for Medical Research, Bridget Vallence, said Victoria’s world-class medical research sector would be further strengthened under the Liberals and Nationals.
“Establishing the Eastern Clinical Trials and Research Centre is an important step forward for Victoria’s medical research industry and will attract leading clinicians and more healthcare workers to Box Hill Hospital.”
