Seville East community fighting for safer roads

On 6 February in State Parliament, local MP Bridget Vallence, Member for Evelyn, demanded the Andrews Labor Government commit funding in this year’s State Budget to improve safety along the Warburton Highway Seville East between Peters and Douthie Roads.

Ms Vallence and the local community have been campaigning for over a year for the State Government to fix this dangerous stretch of road.

When Ms Vallence raised community concerns in State Parliament last year, the Minister for Roads (Jaala Pulford) conceded that VicRoads would undertake an engineering assessment, which would be completed by the end of July 2019.

More than half a year later, nothing has changed.

No action has been taken by the Andrews Labor Government and it’s agencies. Motorists are still unable to turn safely to and from their homes, and with start of the school year there is still no safe way for school children to cross from the bus stops.

Ms Vallence demanded the Government release the recommendations made by VicRoads resulting from the engineering assessment, and finally commit adequate funding to make this stretch of Warburton Highway Seville East safer.

Comments attributable to Bridget Vallence, Member for Evelyn:

“More than six months after a VicRoads review, nothing has changed. No action has been taken by the Andrews Labor Government to make Warburton Highway in Seville East safer”.

“Motorists are still unable to turn safely and with the school year having just begun there is still no safe way for school children to safely cross from the bus stops”.

“Local residents have been told by VicRoads that plans to fix Warburton Highway Seville East have been shelved and put in a “pipeline project list”.

“Local residents don’t deserve to wait any longer. The Andrews Labor Government needs to take action now before another tragedy occurs on this road. I will keep working hard with the Seville East community to get this road fixed”.
