Locals call for road upgrades in Seville East

Monday, 15 April 2019
Safety upgrades are urgently needed on a dangerous stretch of the Warburton Highway in Seville East.
The Seville community has raised concerns about how dangerous Warburton Highway is at Peters Road, Sunnyside Road, and Douthie Road, both for vehicles turning off or entering the highway and for pedestrians who struggle to cross safely from the bus stops.
Seville East residents and local traffic police met with the local State Member for Evelyn, Bridget Vallence, at the corner of Peters Road and Warburton Highway on Wednesday 10th April to discuss their concerns about this unsafe stretch of road. They shared stories of frequent and serious crashes particularly at the Peters Road intersection, and the fears they have for their children’s safety when crossing from the bus stop.
Calls from locals have intensified after the recent tragic death of a Woori Yallock man on this stretch of Warburton Highway. The local traffic police who also attended Wednesday’s meeting had to attend this fatal accident, and stressed how important it was to improve the safety particularly on this stretch of Warburton Highway.
Ms Vallence listened to the calls of locals and the police for dedicated turning lanes and traffic islands to be installed. Requests made to VicRoads by Seville East residents have so far fallen on deaf ears, and the State Labor Government has failed to invest sufficiently in road maintenance and safety upgrades throughout the Yarra Valley.
Comments attributable to State Member for Evelyn, Ms Bridget Vallence MP:
“The Seville community is rightly concerned about this dangerous stretch of Warburton Highway at Peters Road. Local residents and traffic police have shared with me their stories of frequent and serious accidents which highlight the dangers, and are calling for a common sense approach to install turning lanes and traffic islands to make this stretch of road safer.
If the Labor Government is serious about road safety and saving lives they should act swiftly to upgrade these known dangerous hot spots. I will be calling on the Minister for Roads requesting urgent action to install dedicated turning lanes and traffic islands on Warburton Highway at Peters Road and Sunnyside Road”.
